The red, black and yellow of the Aboriginal flag is now flying outside the Stawell Police Station.
In a symbol of respect and welcome for Koories, the flag was raised at the station in a special ceremony.
Stawell is now one of five stations in the Grampians region to carry out the new initiative, which aims to break down the barriers between the Koori community and police.
The ceremony kicked off with words from Senior Sergeant Paul Margetts before a response from the chairman of Grampians RAJAC figure Larry Kanoa. Northern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Bryan Small was in attendance among a small gathering of the community.
``The local police have a very good partnership with the aboriginal communities of Stawell and Halls Gap,'' Snr Sgt Paul Margetts said.
``The Stawell Police enjoy excellent support from Budja Budja and Brambuk who have assisted with training programs, the establishment of a community justice panel and developing day to day police services to the aboriginal community.
``Traditionally, police stations conjure negative thoughts from many individuals in the community and that is the case for some Aboriginal people too. The initiative of the Grampians RAJAC to fund the installation of a second flag pole and providing a Koori flag is a significant step in working towards better relationships and improving communication.''
A similar ceremony was held in Halls Gap last year, which tied in with the new Human Rights Charter.
