Helper updated on school redevelopment

5/08/2008 9:28:00 AM
Since viewing the plans for Skene Street's redevelopment in 2006, Member for Ripon, Joe Helper, visited the school to see where the project was at.

Principal Robyn Anyon was able to inform Mr Helper that since his last visit in late 2007, the school had been relocated to the oval and the Technical School woodwork room had been demolished.

Most importantly - the successful tenderer for the demolition of the old Technical School trade wing and the construction of the new school will be announced by mid August.

Skene Street School staff and students are looking forward to the next stage of development in readiness for their new school. They enjoyed showing Mr Helper their present classrooms and the work they are doing at present.

Staff were able to spend time with Mr Helper talking about how their classes have settled in to the 2008 year so well amongst the many changes which are occurring around them.

Mr Helper was very interested in hearing about the various activities which Skene Street School students had been involved with this week including:

- Meals on Wheels. Seniors H have begun delivering meals as part of the ADVANCE program which requires voluntary work in the community.

- Project Platypus. In partnership with students 1,120 trees were planted this week. This is also part of the ADVANCE program for the Senior students.

- Bike Education. An important part of the school program in which road rules and safety are taught to students with practical sessions being taken on roads and at the velodrome.

- A visit to the Stawell Secondary College music concert enjoying a concert provided by student guest artists from McKinnon Secondary College.

- Learning more about recycling when Mr Graeme Anyon brought his truck to school to reinforce facts learnt from an earlier visit.
