Northgate assists community

Northgate Stawell Gold Mines have provided the following 14 groups with grant funding for important community projects.

Project Platypus (Upper Wimmera Landcare) received a grant to assist them in working with eight students from the Skene Street School to build and install nesting boxes.

The nesting boxes will provide habitat for native birds and mammals and are to be distributed to 50 landholders across Project Platypus revegetation sites.

Stawell Secondary College received funding to implement an anti-bullying program for years seven, eight and nine students.

This program will provide interactive anti-bullying seminars which aim to reduce bullying in schools and provide students with strategies to manage their behavior towards others within the school and within the local community.

Stawell Church of Christ Men's Group was granted a trailer which will primarily be used to transport a wood splitter and for the delivery of donated and split wood.

Up until now members of the Stawell Church of Christ have had to borrow or use their own trailers to enable the wood splitting and donation program to continue.

Stawell City Brass Band received a grant to enable them to upgrade their music library.

The Stawell City Brass Band rehearses weekly and provides an invaluable service to the community by performing at community events. The upgrade to the music library will enable them to replace missing or damaged instruments and allow them to expand their repertoire.

Lenzone! Youth Resource Centre was provided with a grant to purchase a Playstation 2 gaming console as well as a variety of games suitable for people aged 12 - 25.

The PS2 will provide young people with an alternative for after school activities and will bring them through the doors of Lenzone where they can access information to stay engaged with education, training and employment.

Great Western Recreation Reserve Committee of Management received funds to build a pipeline which will transfer water from the Great Western racecourse to the Great Western Recreation Reserve sporting oval approximately 1.5km away.

This project will enable the community of Great Western to continue to use their recreation reserve which provides a recreational outlet and sense of regional community.

Stawell Regional Arts Inc was granted funds to assist with the creation and installation of a public arts sculpture at the Stawell Leisure Centre.

The project will combine the talents of local youth from participating schools with varied abilities with those of local and professional artists. The sculpture will consist of objects collected from around Stawell and will be created over two workshop sessions.

Deep Lead Progress Association received a grant to upgrade the kitchen facilities in the Deep Lead Hall.

The upgrade of the kitchen will bring the facilities up to current standards which will enable the hall to be used for a wider range of functions to benefit the broader regional community.

Stawell Gymnastics Club Inc received a grant to upgrade their equipment to make it more suitable for current safety requirements and the increasing skill levels of their 90 plus junior gymnasts.

This equipment upgrade will increase the number of activities available in classes and allow gymnasts to achieve higher skill levels.

Stawell and District Cultural Association was given a grant to enable them to upgrade the facilities in the `Overland Room' at the Stawell Railway Station Gallery.

The Association will use this grant to create a first class facility which will be available for hire as a function room for the whole community.

Skene Street School received a funding grant to assist with the purchase of a limited mobility accessible tricycle.

The school will also receive in-kind support in the form of the assistance of Stawell Gold Mine employees with shifting the school's playground from the old school site to the new school site.

Access to the tricycle and the playground equipment will enhance the physical and mental well being of the Skene Street School students.

Eventide Homes received a grant and some in-kind support to enable them to create a native drought tolerant garden.

The garden will enhance the environment and bring enjoyment to the residents, families, staff, volunteers and general community involved with the Eventide Homes.

Stawell 13 and Under Football Association was granted funding to purchase 48 new football jumpers to complete their set for some 100 junior footballers.

The Association has been running for more than 30 years and aims to teach children from the ages of nine to 13 the fundamental skills of football.

Stawell Intertwine Services' Endeavour Program provides care and day programming for people with intellectual disabilities.

The service received a grant for the creation of a sensory garden at its Frayne Street location which will enable the participants in the program to be involved in the development, planting and maintenance of the garden.

The garden will also provide a therapeutic sensory experience through touch, smell, taste, sound and sight.
