Member for Ripon, Joe Helper, has welcomed the commencement of upgrade works at a bridge in Great Western.
Mr Helper said work had commenced on an $88,500 upgrade to the road bridge over the railway line on Moyston Road/Paxton Street in Great Western.
``This is an important local infrastructure project which will help enhance the safety of road users and the Great Western community,'' Mr Helper said.
``The upgrade involves essential repair works, including the strengthening of timber beams, piles and the repair of the timber abutment.''
Mr Helper said during bridge maintenance works the road bridge will remain open, except for one day of works. The road closure will be in about two to three weeks time depending on the construction program.
``The one day closure of the bridge will be managed by DC Projects using an approved site traffic management plan in liaison with Northern Grampians Shire.
``The alternative road access will be via Cemetery Road or as nominated by Northern Grampians Shire.''
Train freight and passenger operations are not expected to be delayed. The upgrade is estimated to be completed within the next three to four weeks.
VicTrack, project managers on behalf of the State Government, have awarded a contract for the upgrade to experienced bridge maintenance firm, DC Projects Pty Ltd.
VicTrack apologises for any inconvenience and urges local commuters and residents to follow safety instructions.
The works are funded under VicTrack's Bridge Renewal Program.
