 Grasshoppers can hit back

Grasshoppers can hit back

29/08/2008 10:32:00 AM
Rokewood-Corindhap will have little time to lick its wounds with its mission tomorrow being the RegionalOne Lexton Plains Football League preliminary final.

The Grasshoppers lost out to Carngham Linton in last Saturday's second semi final clash, their first loss for the 2008 season.

Now while Carngham-Linton wait in the wings for a grand final opponent Rokewood-Corindhap and Skipton will get down to business in the preliminary final at Ararat's Alexandra Oval.

Skipton goes into the preliminary final following a 52 point victory against Illabarook in the elimination semi final, which followed a 72 point mauling by Carngham-Linton.

This meeting is the fifth between the two clubs in finals, with the current standings at two all.

Rokewood-Corindhap won the first match this year by 39 points in wet conditions, while the second clash was a draw in a low scoring match.

They will both be confident going into this match, as history shows not a whole lot separates the two teams.

It could come down to the team which makes the least mistakes.

Turnovers will prove costly as both have focal points up forward, and strong running midfields.

The wide expanses of the Alexandra Oval will test the fitness of the teams, with perhaps Rokewood-Corindhap taking a slight edge into the game in this department.

The Grasshoppers, although defeated last week, played on a slightly better oval as far as conditions are concerned, while Skipton slugged it out on a heavier Smythesdale ground.

The Emus may have come away with some niggling injuries, which will test the training staff to manage these to a degree that they will able to hit the field in a fit state.

Both teams have their key players, but it is time for the lesser lights to make a stand.

Rokewood-Corindhap's Kurt Lipp, Mark Ashmore, Craig Jobe and Lee Stewart have made their marks at various stages of the season.

So too have Skipton's Matthew Hind, Heath Anderson, James Collins and Paul Keirl.

The Grasshoppers have scored 29 more goals for the year and this too could come to the fore tomorrow.

James McNamee and Brett Augustine have notched 121 goals between them for Rokewood-Corindhap, while Skipton's Tim McKay and Kiernan Molloy have kicked two more between them.

This indicates a few more avenues to goal for the Grasshoppers and if their midfield can get their hands on the ball enough, they just might be able to get a win and get another crack at Carngham-Linton.

This promises to be a cliffhanger.

My Tip: Rokewood-Corindhap.

In the reserves preliminary final clash Navarre gets another chance after going down to Rokewood-Corindhap in last week's second semi final.

After a promising start Navarre were outclassed and lost out by a big margin of 72 points.

There will be no second chances for Navarre here on in and Hayden Torney, Barry Fletcher, Corey Hope and Nauruans Vili-kesa Jeremiah and Torio Mwareow will need to be at their best to get Navarre over the line tomorrow and into next week's grand final clash.
