Navarre blown away by reigning premiers

22/07/2008 8:28:00 AM
Navarre remains inside the Lexton Plains Football League top five despite a 40 point loss to reigning premiers Carngham-Linton on Saturday.

It was again a mid-match lapse that cost the Grasshoppers as the Saints piled on seven goals to two in the third quarter to open up an unassailable 36 point lead at the final change.

After returning to the side on Saturday, defender Ben Crichton and playmaker Louis Hannett were named as the Grasshoppers' best with Heath Hemley and Jacob Piccoli also important throughout the afternoon. Daniel Wiseman (two goals) and Luke Bibby were also included in Navarre's team.

Joint coach Damien Scott said it was a disappointing period late in the second term and through the third quarter where the Saints midfield was able to completely dictate terms.

``I think for about five minutes at the end of the second quarter and all of the third we basically stopped,'' Scott said.

``We just got badly beaten in the centre.''

Scott said his team would almost be at full strength for this weekend's clash with ladder-leaders Rokewood-Corindhap with Bryce Tickner and Luke Notting expected to be available.

Navarre is locked on 20 points with both Illabarook and Lexton, just under two per cent clear of the Tigers who sit in sixth.

They tackle Lexton in the final home and away round of the season in a game that could decide which team will secure a finals berth.

Rokewood-Corindhap has made a huge statement a month out from the finals when it squashed Lexton by 118 points, 23.25 (163) to 7.3 (45).

The Tigers were saved from a larger defeat by the inaccuracy of the Grasshoppers, but 48 scoring shots to ten told the tale.

Rokewood-Corindhap's goals were shared between nine players with coach James McNamee booting six, taking his tally to 63.

The story of the day was simple, Rokewood-Corindhap was too quick and too skillful, running Lexton off their feet.

Natte-Bealiba scored its third win for the year, but did it tough against Ararat Eagles.

The Swans trailed at half-time, but got away in the third quarter and held off a determined Eagles outfit to win by 16 points, 14.7 (91) to 11.9 (75).

The win keeps the Swans remote hope of a finals berth still alive, while the Eagles will again finish in eighth spot.

Jamie Evans and Ben de Bono played well for the victors, with Brent Bulger booting five goals, the biggest single haul for the Eagles since round ten last year.

Illabarook has fallen short by the narrowest possible margin to score an upset win.

Skipton recorded the victory, but almost kicked itself out of the contest.

The Emus had 11 more scoring shots in their 10.19 (79) to 12.6 (78) win Sunday.

Despite the loss, Illabarook jumped two spots on the ladder to fourth, but still has the job ahead of it to make the final month of football.
