Kaye Matthews race revamped

8/08/2008 9:30:00 AM
Stawell Harness Racing Club (SHRC) has revamped the Kaye Matthews Tribute race.

The race will now be a stand alone event after being run as heats and a final in past years.

The feature race, which will be held on the club's twilight card on Sunday, November 16, now carries a race stake of $8000 and will be restricted to lady drivers.

A lingerie and beauty package, sponsored by Sheer Illusions to the value of $500, will be awarded to the winning driver, with the successful owners receiving a trophy from the Angelique Club.

SHRC President Geoff Sanderson said he was delighted the event had been altered to a stand alone race.

``To have the best lady drivers compete and be rewarded with the bonus of the lingerie and beauty package is a great result and to have the Angelique Club involved again is a great tribute to Kaye,'' he said.

``The race will be a great boost to the day which will see the Stawell Agricultural Society hold their Farmers Market later in the day. This will be a day for everyone to come along and enjoy a twilight race meeting and attend the market as well.''

Mr Sanderson was also delighted to announce free entry for the twilight meeting.

``We want to make this a community day for all to attend and see what harness racing in Stawell is all about and what it has to offer with the building of a new track in the future,'' he said.

``If this twilight meeting goes as good as we feel it should, more will be added next season during the spring and summer months.''

Leading reinsman Daryl Douglas is on target to equal or even break Kerryn Manning's Australasian record of 371 winners at Stawell on Monday.

Douglas, who was 11 short of Manning's record before yesterday's meeting at Mildura, has a good book of drives at Stawell.

He was engaged to drive at Geelong last night, Charlton and Moonee Valley today, Bendigo tomorrow and Cranbourne on Sunday before Monday's meeting.
