For years Navarre horsewoman Marnie Bibby has wanted to drive horses.
That dream is starting to become a reality with the 31 year-old on a quest to gain her driver's licence and begin racing on the Victorian circuit.
Bibby, who says she has had her trainer's licence since around 1995, drove her first trial race at Stawell on Sunday last week, the first of twenty clean drives required to be granted a driving licence.
``It was all I have wanted to do, but mum wasn't too keen on that,'' Bibby said.
``I wish when I got my trainer's licence I had got my driver's licence too.
Bibby, who works at Stawell Petstock, said she was nervous in the lead-up to Sunday's debut trail drive with her horse Creating A Scene.
``It's just like trackwork I suppose, but I was nervous before I went out there,'' she said.
``But once I got out there I was fine.''
Bibby said the main reason behind pursuing a driver's licence is to help educate some of her horses, but she admits she will try her hand under real race conditions when the time is right.
``I have been training for ages so it's just easier to fix problems with your own horses and take them to the trials and drive them yourself.
``I'd like to, but I think if you want to be a good driver you have got to do it all the time.
``There is a fella who has just moved to Navarre and he has got a keen interest in horses too. He has brought a couple with him and I think maybe I can get a few more horses to drive that's probably why (I have gone for it now).
``I have got a few young ones coming up and it will be handy to take them to the trials and fix any problems.''
While there is not too many major race highlights during her time as a trainer, Bibby gets her biggest thrill from seasoned horses purchased as claimers.
Two of these more recent claimers, OK Contact and Stop N Ask, both won races in their stay with Bibby.
``To get them back going is a big thrill and then they got claimed off me for more than I got them for,'' Bibby said.
``You learn a lot from them and they are lovely horses to work with. The ability is there, you have just got to tap it again.
``I am definitely going to do that again, I love it because they are race fit and you can take them to the races. I usually give them two weeks off.
Bibby said she often looked for a cheap claimer which gave her some scope to improve it and then sell it off for more than her original purchase.
``I try and find one that is not worth $8000 because you can't put anymore money on it,''
``If you get it going good you can put the price up and make a couple of thousand dollars. That's what happened with the last two I had.''
