Stawell was one of many thoroughbred training facilities across Victoria to benefit from a $2.1 million Brumby Government funding boost for the racing industry.
Racing and Events Manager at Wimmera Racing Matt Hall said the club received a government contribution of around $35,000, which had been used to erect a three metre chain mesh fence around the horse swimming pool in the centre of the racecourse.
This money is in addition to funding from Racing Victoria which has allowed the construction of the same fence around the entire perimeter of the course.
``The club is delighted to be able to improve safety for horses and riders using the training facilities, as well as members of the public in areas adjacent to the racecourse,'' he said.
``The ability to contain horses on the property is vital and the funding demonstrates the ongoing support of the State Government for the racing industry and the industry's commitment to the health and safety of participants, horses and the general public.''
Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Mr Rob Hulls said the $2.1 million grant, through the Brumby Government's Racing Industry Development Program (RIDP), would benefit 12 regional racecourses.
Yarra Glen, Sale, Seymour, Ballarat, Bairnsdale, Kyneton, Wodonga, Warrnambool, Moe, Mornington and Cranbourne will also share in the $2.1 million funding boost.
``Safety is one of the biggest issues that confronts the racing industry and this funding will help improve safety management and animal welfare, and enhance the available facilities for riders, trainers and associated staff,'' Mr Hulls said.
``This funding will be used for 17 different projects at 12 racecourses throughout Victoria and is part of the Brumby Government's commitment to ensuring the industry provides the best and the safest environment for the well being of all industry participants.''
Stawell will welcome racing for the first time this season on Saturday, September 6. The Stawell Cup is scheduled for April 12.
