Students at Halls Gap Primary School have put forward a strong and reasonable case to have Mackey's Peak renamed as Cherub Peak.
The peak is located behind the grave of Agnes Folkes, a legend of Halls Gap even though she lived for just three months.
It was named Mackey's Peak after the then Minister for Lands, Mr Mackey, visited the area in 1920 and signed contracts for roads to be built on the mountain.
However, the community of Halls Gap has always known the peak as Cherub Peak and the students are lobbying the Northern Grampians Shire Council to support them in their bid to have the name changed.
The students take great pride in the memory of Agnes Folkes, so much so they have taken it upon themselves over many years to be responsible for the upkeep of the grave site.
This shows a great deal of community spirit by the students and they thoroughly deserve a fair hearing over the name change issue.
After all, the community wants it, the students are the ones who look after the grave and Mr Mackey, who has the peak named after him, only visited Halls Gap once!
Hopefully their letters published below, combined with a petition that has gathered more than 400 signatures, will be enough to see their campaign bring about a positive outcome for the students.
