Need for police to get tough

Stawell Police are taking a tough stance on various crimes and this is one action that has drawn praise from the community.

Police have been very active in implementing the relatively new hoon legislation, having forced several hoon drivers off the road since it was introduced in July 2006.

As well as ensuring drivers who are dangerous to themselves and to others are off the road for periods of time - and making sure they are made well aware that a repeat offence could have huge ramifications, police are also working hard to stamp out other crimes that are becoming all too common.

Common assault is one of those crimes and unfortunately, it is starting to rear its ugly head more and more.

Police often patrol areas where there are parties taking place to try and keep situations like assault under control, but they do need assistance from the public in knowing where those parties are and when they are occurring.

This is where the Partysafe initiative becomes so important, with parties being registered with police who can then conduct regular patrols.

The same co-operation from the community also applies in helping police track down hoon drivers.

The public can assist by taking down the registration of any offending vehicle and reporting any incident to police, who can then act and put the offender off the road for a period of 48 hours when it is a first offence.

The consequences are much greater for subsequent offenders.

So it is a fact that police need to get tough, but so too does the community to stamp out these offences.
